Christophe Van Orshoven

Christophe leads the EU REDD Facility‘s team, and the design and implementation of the Facility’s strategy. Before that he led the Facility’s legal work on land allocation and forest conversion, and was responsible for knowledge management and informing EU policymaking on deforestation.

Christophe previously worked at Belgium’s Federal Ministry for the Environment where he was involved in the development of the EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan and the EU Timber Regulation, and followed forest issues at the UN climate change negotiations. He has a background in environmental economics and international relations.

Thomas Sembres

Thomas Sembres

Supply chain transparency and land-use planning

Thomas leads the Facility‘s work with producer and consumer countries on enhancing the transparency of forest-risk commodity trade. He engages in the Transparency for Sustainable Economies (Trase) initiative to improve monitoring of forest-risk supply chains. He also leads the Facility’s work on land-use planning, by managing and developing activities that use the Facility’s interactive Land-use Planner tool.

Thomas previously worked on land-use governance issues at the UN Environment Programme (Kenya), the World Bank (United States) and philanthropic foundations. He has a background in environmental policy.

Adeline Dontenville

Land-use finance, public-private partnerships and Côte d’Ivoire

Adeline leads the Facility’s work on land-use finance analysis and supports governments and stakeholders in Francophone Africa and South-East Asia in designing and implementing incentives to reduce deforestation and forest degradation.

Adeline was previously based in the Philippines, as climate change and environment project officer for the French Development Agency (AFD). Before that she worked at the European Commission as part of the EU international climate negotiations team, focusing on climate finance. She has a background in EU policy and risk analysis.

Frédéric Baron

Democratic Republic of the Congo, Colombia and Ecuador

Frédéric coordinates the Facility’s work on land-use planning, land-use finance and supply chain transparency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Latin America, supporting governments and stakeholders in their strategies to reduce deforestation.

Frédéric was previously based in Madagascar, as a REDD Chief Technical Advisor for the World Bank. He has also researched forest carbon markets at the Institute for Climate Economics (I4CE) and worked as a project manager at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environment (LSCE). He has a background in tropical forestry.

Satrio provides technical and analytical support for the Facility’s work on forest and land use governance in Southeast Asia. He is based in the European Forest Institute’s office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Satrio previously worked on forest and ocean issues at World Resources Institute Indonesia, where he managed projects and conducted research on forest and landscape restoration, social forestry, and sustainable ocean and coastal ecosystems. He has a background in climate science, environmental studies, and international relations.

Romuald Vaudry

Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon

Romuald leads the Facility’s work on sustainable land-use policies in Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon. He also contributes to the Facility’s work on public-private partnerships promoting sustainable agricultural production, landscapes and supply chains in Central and West Africa.

Romuald was previously based in Africa, coordinating REDD+ projects for the French NGO Nitidæ. He has also served as a forest technician for the Regional Office for Private Woodland in Normandy, France. He has a background in forestry and integrated land-use planning.

Michaela Foster

Data and Policy Analyst

Michaela Foster is a Data and Policy Analyst. She provides support to the Facility’s work on transparency in forest-risk commodity supply chains, inclusive land-use planning, and land-use finance. She also supports the integration of Facility lessons and approaches in the implementation of EU policies addressing deforestation in tropical forest countries.

Prior to joining EFI, Michaela completed a PhD at Yale University on the impacts of natural resource policies on land use change. She has a background in environmental science and policy.

Carlos Riano

Carlos Riano

Vietnam, Laos – Land use expert

Carlos coordinates the sustainable land-use investment and management and land use governance in Vietnam and Laos, contributing in particular to the EU funded Integrated Sustainable Landscape Management.

Carlos has a long track record of supporting partners countries in designing and implementing REDD+ and sustainable land use programmes. Since 2012, he has supported the development of the UN-REDD+ agenda in DRC, Uganda and Côte d´Ivoire, where he also collaborated with EFI. In 2017 he became UNDP´s REDD+ technical advisor in Cambodia from where he joined EFI in Kuala Lumpur. He has a technical background in GIS, remote sensing and forest carbon monitoring.
